China to achieve steady growth in foreign trade in 2025: Strong resilience and shift towards high-tech industries

Data from China’s General Administration of Customs showed that the total value of China’s foreign trade in the first nine months of 2025 reached 33.61 trillion yuan , an increase of 4% compared to the previous year.
Exports totaled 19.95 trillion yuan (+7.1%) and imports totaled 13.66 trillion yuan (-0.2%) , reflecting the stability of the Chinese economy and its ability to achieve balanced growth despite global challenges.

Continuous growth and a well-established global position

China’s trade has seen continuous growth for four consecutive months, with the value of trade in September alone reaching 4.04 trillion yuan (+8%) .
China also continued to occupy the top spot globally in merchandise trade, with a share of 11.8% of total global trade.

Green technology and innovation drive exports

High-tech and sustainable industries have become the main growth engine of Chinese exports.
Exports of industrial robots rose by 54.9% and wind power equipment by 23.9% , and global demand for electric vehicles and clean energy products also increased.
In contrast, traditional products with a cultural character, such as paper cutouts, wooden crafts, and dragon boats, have regained their presence in global markets through innovative designs that combine authenticity and modernity.

Private companies are in the lead

The private sector made a significant contribution to this growth, with its foreign trade reaching 19.16 trillion yuan (+7.8%) , or 57% of total Chinese trade , the highest percentage in history.
These companies also expanded their exports to ASEAN (+14%), Africa (+27.3%) and Central Asia (+11.8%) , with their exports of technical products rising by 15.3% .

Traditional industries are being revived... and new ones are rapidly emerging.

The manufacturing industry remains the backbone of trade, with exports amounting to 12.07 trillion yuan , representing 60.5% of total exports .
Meanwhile, high-tech industries and green products have led the new wave of growth, while processed agricultural products such as sturgeon caviar and coffee concentrates have seen increasing demand in global markets.

Diversifying markets strengthens the economy.

Despite the slowdown in the global economy, China continued to expand its network of trading partners , with its total trade with Belt and Road countries reaching 17.37 trillion yuan (+6.2%) , which is more than half of its foreign trade .
Its trade with Africa and Central Asia also increased by 19.5% and 16.7% respectively, enhancing its resilience to international fluctuations.

📊 Summary:
China is steadily moving towards a smarter and more sustainable business model, relying on innovation, technology, and the private sector as a key driving force.
With continued government support and streamlined customs procedures, Chinese trade is expected to maintain its strong momentum throughout 2026 .
